New players are frequently unable to realize their potential by being unable to buy equipment; pay for specialized coaching; or commit to and travel to tournaments as a result of insufficient money. Many players lack the knowledge and ability to find sources of sponsorship or investor funds.

Here's the reality of what a new player trying to enter the tough world of professional tennis will generally face:

He will need to earn ranking points by winning rounds in the main draw of the lowliest of professional events - $10,000 Futures tournaments. Without an established ranking he will need to gain entry into the main draw by entering the qualifying rounds. Finding one that he can get in without a ranking is his first (and often insurmountable) hurdle. He can only get a ranking by gaining points by winning matches in a Futures main draw. But most Futures qualifying events are oversubscribed by players who already have rankings..! And he will only find out by traveling - often 1,000's of miles - to the event. (No internet sign-up here!)

But, let's assume he travels to enough events and finally finds one to enter. He will then need to win three or four consecutive matches against 64 or 128 other players - many of whom have rankings as high as 400-500 in the world who are also after one of the 4 or 8 spots into the main draw. If he loses any of his matches, he's out. If he wins ALL his matches he qualifies for the main draw - and then faces an opponent who could be as high as 200 in the world. If he loses his first round match, he's on the road home - with no ranking points and a check for $82 ($117 less 30% tax) to nail to the wall for his efforts. He will only get that valuable single ranking point if he wins his first round match and advances to the second round. Yes, $82 for traveling cross-country or even internationally to find an event he can get into, spending 4 or 5 days in a hotel and, of course, winning 4 or 5 matches against world-class players. And what riches does the eventual winner of the whole event receive 4 more days of grueling competition (and more expenses) later? The huge sum of $910 ($1,300 - 30% tax)...!
The road to success on the pro tennis circuit is a very tough and expensive one.

Young players need all the help they can get - YOUR help.

There are, we know, many individuals; companies or groups that would be interested in sponsoring or investing in a player. Not only tennis equipment manufacturers, distributors or retailers but also individual fans who want to be part of the success of a player that they can associate with as well as community groups or tennis clubs or leagues within a player's home town who want to 'adopt' 'their' player.

PHILGYM is seeking to help bring players and sponsors/investors together through its "promote-a-pro" program.

You can support and promote a player in one of two ways:

Personal Sponsorship

The sponsor pledges a fixed amount of money to the player for a fixed time frame - generally a year. The amount is fixed each year and is currently $10 per month billed automatically to your credit card.

In return for sponsorship, the player receives $100 per year to help with expenses. There is no financial return to the sponsor who does, however, receive the following benefits:

• An official certificate of sponsorship signed by the player (11" x 8 1/2") click here for a sample

• An emailed report of the player's progress through the year which will include personal comments and reports by the player

• The opportunity of meeting with the player at tournaments

• The opportunity to receive complimentary player passes to events where the player competes (as available during the year)

• The opportunity to receive signed memorabilia - balls, racquets, clothing, etc. (as available during the year)

The sponsor therefore directly and meaningfully contributes to the ability of the player to meet his expenses and become established in the tough world of professional tennis.

Investment

This program provides more substantial funding to the player by the player offering a proportion of his or her future earnings to an 'investor' in return for a fixed amount of investment funds.

The player determines the number of shares and the size of the shares - for example, 10 x 5% shares or 4 x 10% shares (The maximum permitted share total is 50% so that the player is equally committed to his success as his promoters.) The player also fixes the amount of investment that is equivalent to a share. This will be related to an assessment of the potential of the player.

• The player benefits from having a known and dependable amount of fixed income that will enable the player to plan and commit to the costs of attending and playing a pre-determined tournament schedule and provide the resources necessary to help maximize the player's potential.

• The promoter benefits by being associated with the growth and development of a pro sports player and has the potential of earning a return on that investment. In addition, the promoter will receive the same level of benefits described under the Sponsorship heading above.
